Designing for Oxford homes

Oxford homes come with character, and with quirks. Tall Victorian villas in North Oxford and Summertown have generous ceilings and fine original details, but often a kitchen that was never meant to be the heart of the house. Terraced cottages in Jericho and around the city centre are full of charm, yet narrow rooms and limited daylight mean every choice of colour, lighting and furniture has to earn its place. Further out, in Headington, Marston and Botley, 1930s and post-war family homes tend to have good bones that respond brilliantly to a joined-up redesign.

Alana’s approach is the same wherever the house is: start with how you live, then design around it. In Oxford that often means opening up a kitchen-diner so the family actually uses it, layering lighting to make the most of north-facing rooms, and introducing bold artwork and natural materials so a period house feels personal rather than like a museum piece.

Inside and out, as one design

Because Alana designs gardens as well as interiors, the room that opens onto your garden and the garden itself are planned together. Same palette, same materials, one coherent feel. In the city that might be a courtyard with a fire pit and built-in seating, a terrace you step straight out onto from the kitchen, or a planted border that frames the view from the sofa.

What working together looks like

  1. A home visit in Oxford. Alana comes to you, walks the space and listens.
  2. Concept and plan. Mood boards, palettes, layouts and lighting.
  3. Sourcing and styling. Furniture, art and finishing touches, sourced and placed.
  4. Handover. A finished space that feels like yours.

Questions from Oxford homeowners

Do you work on period and listed homes in Oxford?+

Yes. Much of Oxford's housing is Victorian or Edwardian and some of it sits in conservation areas or is listed. Most interior design and styling work needs no permission at all, but where a change could need consent (removing walls, replacing windows, some external work), we flag it early so you can check with Oxford City Council or your architect before anything is ordered.

Can you help with a small Oxford garden or courtyard?+

Absolutely. City gardens are often narrow, overlooked or partly shaded. Alana plans them as an extension of the rooms that open onto them, with seating, lighting and planting chosen to make a small space feel deliberate rather than squeezed.

Do you only take on whole-house projects in Oxford?+

No. Plenty of clients start with a single room or a one-off design consultation. You get a clear plan you can carry out yourself, or bring us back in to deliver it.

Let's Talk About Your Space

Every project starts with a conversation. Tell us what you are working with, what is not working, and how you want to feel when you walk through the door. We will take it from there.
