Designing for West Oxfordshire homes

West Oxfordshire is home to some of the county’s most characterful houses: honey-coloured Cotswold stone cottages in Burford and Charlbury, Georgian and Victorian townhouses along the streets of Woodstock and Chipping Norton, converted barns in the surrounding villages, and newer family homes in and around Witney.

Each brings its own design brief. Older stone houses need warmth and light without losing the charm that drew you to them. Barn conversions need warmth and intimacy in rooms that can feel vast. Newer homes often need character added, so they feel lived-in and personal rather than straight off a show-home plan. Alana’s mix of clean modern lines with bold artwork, natural materials and Eastern-inspired touches works across all three.

Gardens and outdoor living

Gardens out here tend to be larger, and that is where Cwtch Design’s joined-up approach really pays off. Alana designs terraces, fire pit areas, pool surrounds and planting as part of the same story as the house, so the kitchen opens onto a space that feels like another room. Think stone that matches the house, planting that softens it through the seasons, and seating you will reach for on an ordinary weekday evening, not just when guests arrive.

What working together looks like

  1. A home visit. Alana comes to you anywhere in West Oxfordshire to see the house and garden together.
  2. Concept and plan. Interiors and outdoor spaces planned side by side.
  3. Sourcing and styling. Furniture, art, lighting and garden accents, sourced and placed.
  4. Handover. A home that reads as one design, inside and out.

Questions from West Oxfordshire & the Cotswolds homeowners

How do you approach a Cotswold stone cottage?+

With respect for what makes it special. Thick walls, small windows and low beams mean light and scale matter more than anything. Alana uses layered lighting, warm but confident colour and carefully sized furniture so the house feels cosy rather than dark, and keeps the original character front and centre.

Can you design for a barn conversion?+

Yes. Barn conversions have the opposite challenge to a cottage: big volumes that can feel cold or echoey. Zoning, rugs, statement lighting and well-chosen art bring them down to a human scale without losing the drama of the space.

Are there planning restrictions on garden work in the Cotswolds?+

Parts of West Oxfordshire fall within the Cotswolds National Landscape and many villages have conservation areas, so some outdoor structures may need permission. Planting, furniture and most garden layouts do not. Where something might, we flag it early so you can check with West Oxfordshire District Council before work starts.
